Summer Recap

I know October is a little late in doing a summer recap, but hey better late than never.  It was neat going through the photos from this summer to see how much the kids have changed and grown since then.  We had a great summer.

We enjoyed 4th of July at Trussville Mall.  Weather was great.  Bennett thought the fireworks were loud, but Anna Kate was amazed.

We had fun with our Bible study class visiting two local fire departments.  As families we took care packages to the firefighters.  Bennett is so into fire trucks and being a fire man.  He still dresses up in last years Halloween costume as a fire man.  I was so surprised how much the fire fighters seemed to enjoy all the kids.  They took more pictures of us than we did of them.  The most stunning comment which confirmed we are doing the right thing is one fire fighter of 11 years said they have had numerous visitors, but never did any one pray for them as we did.  Bennett still talks about this.  We are hoping to continue to make this a family tradition to do each quarter.

We also welcomed a new niece/cousin, baby Avery.  We took the kids on our first of road trips to Nashville to visit my sister's family and see Avery.  The kids loved playing with their cousins - Ethan, Parker, and Micah.  I was amazed at how Anna Kate was with Avery.  She thought she had her own baby.  All she wanted to do the whole weekend was to hold her.  She really did great with her.  I stayed a few extra days in Nashville to help Beth after kids came back.  Anna Kate told her teacher I was bringing a baby home.  Knowing Anna Kate is adopted, I could see how this could be confusing to the teacher thinking we were adopting another baby.  In case there is any question - NO MORE BABIES!  I love my kids, but they are plenty.

We took a late vacation in September to Destin, FL.  Bennett had been asking all summer to go to the beach.  I was not sure if he truly understood, but we looked into doing something.  We found a good deal and went for a long weekend with the kids.  I was more nervous about the ride there.  Anna Kate had still not proven that she could endure a 5 hour trip.  I had lots of snacks and surprises ready for our drive.  The kids really did great traveling, but I was surprised that neither of them really napped.  The first day we went to the pool.  I was so proud of Bennett and Anna Kate getting in the pool and learning to swim.  Bennett was able to dog paddle the length of the pool by himself with a life jacket on.  The second day we went to the beach.  The kids were nervous at first.  Bennett eventually got in with me to jump the waves.  I will say the day we went to the beach the waves were very high.  Bennett also loved looking for sea shells.  Anna Kate enjoyed playing in the sand and making mud.  One night we went to the Harbor to eat at Harry T's.  The kids enjoyed getting to eat and watch the boats.  Overall, it was a great trip and loved the memories we shared.

Not a good idea to throw sand in the air.
Anna Kate dug a hole to fill with water to splash in.  She prefers smaller beaches.
